Adult courses

Spring 2023 Classes


All adult classes require an FCAG membership to participate. See our Membership page for more information on joining the FCAG community. Courses are 8 weeks in duration unless otherwise stated.

Paint at Night (Any Medium / All Levels)

Instructor: Jacqueline Crawley
Time: Mondays from 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Dates: April 3 – May 22, 2023
Studio: June Thomson Studio
Fee: $150

Description: In this session each participant is welcome to bring their own materials and ideas. Jacqueline will work individually with each participant and make suggestions on how to improve their work and advance at their own pace. The focus will be on technique and experimenting.
 
Material List: 
  • Most of the participants in this class work mainly with oils and acrylics, but anything goes. Feel free to bring whatever materials you have!


​Watercolour Painting (Beginner/Intermediate)

Instructor: Nancy Buckingham
Time: Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Dates: April 6 – May 25, 2023
Studio: June Thomson Studio
Fee: $150

Description: Nancy will be teaching beginners and intermediates in this inclusive and welcoming class. The focus will be on each individual's growth with attention to the fundamentals.  Painting demonstrations will be the backbone of each class.
 
Material List: 
  • Watercolour paints (whatever is in your palette)
  • Brushes (a few sizes)
  • Paper (Arches 140 pound)
  • Container (x2), dish cloth/paper towel
  • Masking Tape
  • Board (size of your watercolour paper)
  • Pencil and Kneaded eraser


​Watercolour Painting (Beginner/Intermediate)

Instructor: Vicky Vuksinic
Time: Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Dates: April 5 – May 24, 2023

Fee: $150

Description: Vicky will be teaching the basics of watercolour and how to paint with looseness and freedom, maintaining areas of pure white. The lessons will include materials, the use of colours, proportions and shapes, composition and various techniques.

  • Watercolour paints (whatever is in your palette)
  • Brushes (a few sizes)
  • Paper (Arches 140 pound)

  • Board (size of your watercolour paper)

​Watercolour Painting (Intermediate/Advanced)

Instructor: Wendy Bannerman
Time: Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Dates: April 5 – May 24, 2023
Studio: June Thomson Studio
Fee: $150

Description: This class is perfect for those wanting to brush up on their skills in watercolour or advance their techniques. Lots of demos are given, and students will be able to work on their own or join whatever joint project the class decides to try, while getting individual attention from the instructor on the ‘how to do’s”.

Material List: 
  • I use da Vinci paints but we will make do with any brand. The colour palette should include: Ultramarine blue, Cobalt blue, Cerulean blue, Hands (or a light) yellow, Aureolin (or a deeper) yellow, Raw sienna, Burnt sienna, Alizarin crimson, Viridian green, a pink of some sort (rose madder, quinacridone rose ...), and whatever else you have!
  • ​H or HB pencil
  • Eraser 
  • Paper towel
  • Masking tape and board for painting​


​Oil/Acrylic (Beginner/Intermediate)

Instructor: Catherine De Montmorency
Time: Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Dates: April 4 – May 23, 2023
Studio: June Thomson Studio
Fee: $150

Description: In this class, Catherine will propose and demonstrate the process of creating a painting and participants will be following along and working at their own pace. At the end of each class, there will be a critique where participants help each other on how to improve their work.

Material List: 
  • Canvas (size recommended : 11”x14”)
  • Brushes
  • Palette (StayWet palette recommended for Acrylic Paints)
  • Acrylic/oil paints : ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, cadmium red, alizarin crimson, yellow ochre, cadmium yellow, burnt umber, titanium white
  • For acrylics: thinning medium
  • For oils: linseed oil and odourless turps for oil paints
  • Pencil
  • Paper towels
  • Table cover (a large garbage bag works fine)

Oil/Acrylic (Intermediate/Advanced) 


Instructor: Kelly McNeil
Time: Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.  OR from 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 pm
Dates: April 6 – May 25, 2023
Studio: June Thomson Studio
Fee: $150

Description: In this class, Kelly will improve your skills by teaching techniques on how to look at your reference, measuring and perspective, colour mixing and brush strokes. Kelly encourages individual projects.

Material List: 
  • Canvas (any size)
  • Reference picture or pictures
  • Brushes
  • Palette (StayWet palette recommended for Acrylic Paints)
  • Acrylic/oil paints : ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, permanent rose, alizarin crimson, yellow ochre, lemon yellow, sap green, burnt umber, titanium white 
  • For acrylics: thinning medium
  • For oils: walnut oil (or other medium) and odourless turps for cleaning 
  • Pencil
  • Paper towels
  • Table cover (a large garbage bag works fine)


Drawing of the Figure 

Instructor: No Instructor
Time: Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (includes lunch break)
​Dates: April 29, May 13, May 20 and May 27
Studio: Kramolc Studio
Fee: $85

Description: A different model is available each week for those who enjoy drawing and need some practice. Models start with short poses and increase time gradually. The afternoon consists of one long pose. Models are clothed so you will be able to work on shapes of fabric as well.

Material List: 
  • Most participants use graphite and/or pastels but any medium is welcome.


Plein Air (Intermediate/Advanced)

Instructor: Catherine De Montmorency
Time: Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
​Dates: May 3 – 24, 2023
Studio: TBA
Fee: $85

Description: The participants will meet at a location in the GTA to be announced. The locations will have parking lots and public washrooms available. In case of bad weather, the class will take place indoors. Catherine will show techniques on how to paint in Plein Air.

Material List: 
  • Small Sketchbook and pencil
  • Whatever other medium you’re most comfortable
  • Small canvas or paper
  • Limited colour palette
  • 2-3 brushes (if using paint)
  • Environmentally friendly cleaning materials 
  • You might want to bring a chair/stool or/and a portable easel if you wish. ​


Open Studio

Instructor: No Instructor
Time: Wednesdays 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Studio: June Thomson Studio
Fee: $25 for 4 weeks or FREE if you are already enrolled in two classes​
