Spring 2023 Workshops


​Our one-day workshops are running on Saturdays in April and May. See below for workshop details and click here for a calendar view of our full spring offerings for adults.

Palette Knife Techniques Workshop

Instructor: Jacqueline Crawley
Date and Time:  Saturday, April 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (lunch break included)
Studio: June Thomson Studio
Fee: $50

Description:  Explore what you can do with a “palette knife” during this workshop.  This tool can create striking textures and effects and can be used alone or in combination with a paintbrush. This workshop is designed for all levels.

Materials: 
  • Steel painting knives
  • Heavy Body Acrylics needed or Oils
  • Medium for Acrylics = Gel
  • Medium for Oils = Gel or Paste 
  • Note: Gels thicken paints and can make them transparent. 
  • Palette should be flat - disposable sheets without a hole are recommended.
  • Surfaces - two or three 11x14 min, canvas, board or any painting surface - old paintings to be repainted are fine.
  • Rag or paper towels.


Portrait in Charcoal Workshop

Instructor: Jacqueline Crawley

Description: Learn more about realistic shading using charcoal and pencils. In this workshop participants will revisit the proportion of portraits and understand how to create the eyes, nose and draw skin textures.

Materials:
  • Vine Charcoal
  • Compressed Charcoal
  • ​Charcoal pencils 
  • White Conte or White Chalk
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Blending stump
  • Toned papers
  • Paper towels


Abstract Art Cards Workshop

Instructor: Nancy Buckhingham
Medium: Watercolour
Date and Time:  Saturday, April 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (no lunch break)
Studio: June Thomson Studio

Description: This interactive workshop is perfect for all skill levels. Bring a friend and enjoy a morning full of creativity in a welcoming environment. Nancy's hands-on approach to teaching makes this a "go to" class for everyone. Participants will have fun playing with color and create abstract cards to give as gifts or to frame. There is no fixed color palette for this class.

Materials:
  • Brushes (a few sizes)
  • Paints (whatever is in your palette)
  • Paper (Arches 140 pound)
  • Board (to tape your paper onto)
  • Masking tape (to attach paper to board)
  • Blank w/c cards
  • Two sided Tape (to fix your painting to the blank card)
  • Paper towels
  • Water container(s)
  • Pencil
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Salt (course or fine)
  • Pigma Micron 02 archival ink waterproof black pen (optional)
  • Old toothbrush (optional)
  • Small spray bottle (optional)


Pastels Workshop

Instructor: Maria Iva
Date and Time:  Saturday, May 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (lunch break included)

Description: In this workshop, participants will explore how to use soft pastels to create paintings and familiarize themselves with the medium.

Materials:
  • Pastel paper (with tooth so it can take many layers). Suggestions: UART (grade 320, 400 or 500), Premier Pastel paper or Touch or Colourfix Art Spectrum. White or off-white, size 9x12 or similar.
  • Soft Pastel Set (Suggestions: Prismacolor Nupastel or Rembrandt landscape painting)
  • ​Masking tape
  • Soft brush, any size between 6 to 10
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Paper towels
  • Protective disposable gloves
  • Apron
